Note: You may find it useful to print this page and work from the printed copy - click here

1. Start Microsoft Windows.

2. Make sure your modem is connected to the PC and the phone line and is switched on.

3. Select File then Run

4(a). If you have been sent diskettes, type in a:\setup (or b:\setup if your 3 1/2" floppy diskette drive is drive b:). Follow the prompts and change diskettes as requested.
4(b). If you have been sent a CD-ROM, type in d:\win31\setup (where d: is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive).

5. When asked for the Program Group to create, Change the default name from Microsoft Internet Explorer to TECH INFO Internet. The software will attempt to detect your brand and model of modem and modify the software to ensure communications are channeled through the correct serial port on the computer.

6. When completed the software installation will have created a group called TECH INFO Internet which will contain 4 icons. They are labeled Internet Explorer, MS Mail, Readme and Get on the Net.

7. After Windows has restarted, to complete the setup, double click on "Get on the net"

8. The TECH INFO sign-up screen appears. Click on Install.

9. An icon labeled TECH INFO Internet Service has now been created in the group. You can now delete the "Get on the net" icon as it will no longer be used. To do this click once on the icon, press the delete key and answer yes to the prompt question. The icon disappears.

10. The next stage is to input your user name and password into both the modem dialer program and the MS Mail (e-mail) programs.

11. Double click on the TECH INFO Internet Service icon.

12. Click once in the user name field in the panel which appears. Type in your allocated username from the form returned with this software package. Click on the field labeled password and type in your allocated password also on the form returned with this software package. Note that both the username and password must be in lowercase. If you have a 56k modem, please change the preprogrammed phone number as shown from 9432-7222 to 9433-4444 - this will connect you to the 56k modem system.

13. Select Dial Settings on the lower right of this panel. Make sure the Country is set to Australia (61) and the area code is set to 03.
If you need to dial a number to get a line ie. dial 0 to get an outside line then insert this digit followed by a comma , in the box labeled To access an outside line first dial.
If you have call waiting on your line, it is wise to disable it so that incoming calls do not confuse and possibly disconnect the modem. In Australia the code to disable Telstra Call waiting is #43#.
(To turn Call Waiting back on you will need to dial *43# on one of your touch tone phones after you have finished using the Internet.)
Select OK to close this panel.

14. Select Properties from the lower part of the panel. Click on the Modem tab at the top of the panel. if your PC is a late model 486 or a Pentium, you could adjust the maximum speed from the default of 38400 up to the maximum of 115,200. If in doubt select either 38,400 or 57,600 from the list. Click OK at the bottom to complete this installation.
The software installation and Windows configuration is now complete. You must now finish configuring the internet software.

15. The next task is to connect to the Internet and set up your e-mail account and newsgroup reader as follows:-
Click on the Internet Explorer icon in your TECH INFO Internet group. This will bring up the "Connect to:" screen. Type in your username and password in the two spaces provided and click on Connect. After the modem has dialed and setup the connection, the MS Internet Explorer will automatically load. To setup your e-mail, press the button labeled MAIL on the right hand end of the toolbar line. The first time you do this the "setup wizard" will prompt you through the setup process asking for your Real Name, e-mail address, mail server names (don't change the defaults here), e-mail account name (your username) and password. Make sure you input all of this in lowercase letters. Click on Finish to close this Setup Wizard and click on File then Close to close the e-mail package.

16. Next, pick Mail, then Read News from the pulldown menu list. Follow the Setup Wizard through again by putting in the same information as for the e-mail setup above. The news server name is already inserted in the dialogue box where it is required. Click Finish when completed. Your Internet installation is now complete.

To disconnect from the Internet.
1. Close Internet Explorer. (Pick File then Exit.)
2. Hold down the <Alt> key and keep pressing the <Tab> key until you see the "Connected to TECH INFO" box appear in the centre of the screen. Release both keys.
3. Click on the disconnect button to make the modem hang up and release the phone line.
