CHANGING SETTINGS OF MS EXPLORER 4.x & OUTLOOK EXPRESS

These instructions are written and intended for use with V4.0x of MS Internet Explorer and MS Outlook Express. It is assumed that you have already installed this software and your modem and you may have used the your copy of MS Internet Explorer 4.x with another ISP previously although this is not important.

Go into Control Panel by selecting 'Start' , 'Settings' , 'Control Panel' , then double clicking on the 'Internet' icon.
Under the 'General' tab. Type in the URL of the TECH INFO home page in the 'address' box as:- http://www.techinfo.com.au then click on 'Apply'
Select the 'Security' tab. Make sure 'medium' security is selected then click on 'Apply'
Select the 'Content' tab. Do not touch the 'Content Advisor' - (this will prevent Internet Explorer from working at all).

Click on 'Connection' tab. Under 'connection' click on 'connect to the Internet using a modem' then click on 'settings' . Click on 'Add' . Under 'Type a name for the computer you are dialing' type in ' Tech Info ' . Select your modem in the 'Select a device' box, then press 'Next' . Type in the 'Area code' as 03 and the 'Telephone number' as 9432-7222 for modems other than 56k and 9433-4444 for 56k modems. The 'Country code' should be set to Australia (61) then press 'Next' then click on Finish

Next click on Properties . Under the General tab, the Area code, Phone number should already be set. Put a tick in the box labeled 'use area code and dialing' properties' . At the bottom of the screen make sure your modem is selected in the 'Connect using' box.

Under the ' Server types ' tab, the screen which appears should have 'Type of Dial-Up Server' set as PPP:Windows 95, WindowsNT, Internet in the box. On the rest of the screen, the boxes marked 'Enable software compression' and 'TCP/IP' (under protocols) are the only ones with ticks (or crosses) in them - all others are blank.

Select TCP / IP Settings On the page which appears, there should be a "radio button" (a black dot) should be in 'Server assigned IP address' and another in 'Specify name server address' . In the 'Primary DNS' type in (in place of the 0.0.0.0) 203.63.149.1 and in the 'Secondary DNS' type in 203.63.149.2 . Both the 'Primary WINS' and 'Secondary WINS' should have 0.0.0.0 in them. Both the 'Use IP header compression' and 'Use default gateway on remote network' should have ticks in the box beside these options.

Press OK then OK to close off the Dial-Up Networking setup.

You should now be back in the 'Dial-up settings' screen.
Under 'user' type in your TECH INFO username eg. fred
Under 'password' type in your TECH INFO assigned password

The 'Domain name' is not required and should be blank. A tick should be in the box labeled 'disconnect if idle for xx minutes' . The time should be set to 10 minutes. The box labeled 'connect automatically to update subscriptions' should be blank. The box labeled 'perform security check before dialing' should have a tick in it. Click on 'OK' all these settings back to the 'Internet Properties' screen.

Under the 'Proxy Server' section, click on 'Access the internet using a proxy server' , then click on 'Advanced'

In the 'HTTP' box at the top type in proxy.techinfo.com.au and in the 'port' box to the right type in 8080 Make sure the box labeled 'Use the same proxy server for all protocols' has an X in it. Click 'OK' to finish. Click on 'Apply' to save these changes.

Select the 'Programs' tab. Select 'Outlook Express' for both your Mail and News programs.

Select the 'Advanced' tab. Do not change anything on this screen.

Select 'OK' to save these changes and go back to the 'Control Panel' screen. Click on the X at the top right hand corner of the dialogue box to close all open windows back to a clean screen.

MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS V4 MAIL SETUP
From the Windows desktop screen, double click on 'Outlook Express'. Select 'Tools' then 'accounts' Click on 'Add' then select 'Mail'
Enter under 'Display Name' your real name eg. Fred Smith using upper and lower case as you choose. Click on 'Next'
Under 'e-mail address' type in your assigned e-mail address eg. [email protected]
(Note: If you are a previous Gravity Internet customer, use   [email protected]   in the instructions above)
Note that this is all in lower case with no spaces. Click on 'Next'
At the top of this screen, the line should read 'Incoming mail server is a POP3 server'
In the box labeled 'Incoming mail (POP3) server name' is: mail.techinfo.com.au
The 'Outgoing (SMTP) server name' is also: mail.techinfo.com.au Press 'Next'

In this screen, where it says 'logon using' , under the 'POP account name' type in your username eg. fred Under password type in your TECH INFO assigned password. Press 'Next' . In the 'Friendly Name' screen, in the box labeled the 'Internet mail account name' type in ' Tech Info Mail ' then press 'Next'

Make sure there is a black dot in the 'Connect using my phone line' , then press 'Next '.
Make sure there is a black dot in the 'Use an existing dial-up connection ', click on Tech Info in the box, then press 'Next' , then 'Finish'

MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS V4 NEWS-READER SETUP
Continuing on from the Mail setup above, to setup the News Reader, click on 'add' , then select 'news' Type in the 'Display Name' as you want to see it, eg. Fred Smith as you want to see it using upper and lower case letters. After this press 'Next'.

Under 'e-mail address' type in your TECH INFO e-mail address eg. [email protected] then press ' Next '
(Note: If you are a previous Gravity Internet customer, use   [email protected]   in the instructions above)
Type in the News (NNTP) Server name as: news.techinfo.com.au
The box labeled 'My news server requires me to log on' should not have a tick in it. Press ' Next ' Under 'Internet News Account name' type in ' Tech Info News' then press 'Next'

Make sure there is a black dot in the 'Connect using my phone line' , then press 'Next'
Make sure there is a black dot in the 'Use an existing dial-up connection ' click on Tech Info in the box, then press 'Next' , then 'Finish'.

Next pick ' Close '

You are now setup to run your MS Explorer V4.x with the TECH INFO Internet service.
To connect to the Internet, simply double click on the Internet icon on the desktop screen (the blue 'e').
