CHANGING SETTINGS OF MS EXPLORER 5 &
OUTLOOK EXPRESS® TO THE TECH INFO INTERNET SERVICE.
Note: You may
find it useful to print this page and work from the printed copy - click here
These instructions are written and intended for use
with V5 of MS Internet Explorer and MS Outlook Express. It is assumed that you have
already installed this software and your modem and you may have used the your copy
of MS Internet Explorer 5 with another ISP previously although this is not important.
Go into Control
Panel by selecting 'Start',
'Settings', 'Control Panel', then double click on the 'Internet Options' icon.
Under the 'General'
tab. Type in the URL of the TECH INFO
home page in the 'address' box as:- http://www.techinfo.com.au
then click on 'Apply'
Select the 'Security' tab. Make sure 'medium' security is selected then click on
'Apply' only if you changed the
setting.
Select the 'Content'
tab. Do not touch the 'Content Advisor'
- (this will prevent Internet Explorer from working at all).
Next, click on 'Connections' tab. Under the 'dial up settings' panel, click on 'Add' then in the new dialogue box which
appears fill in the following information: 'Name
of computer you are dialing/phone book entry' is Tech Info, make sure your modem is selected under 'select a device' and then click 'next'. Type in the 'Area code' as 03 and the 'Telephone number' as 9432-7222 for modems other than 56k and 9433-4444 for 56k modems. The 'Country or region code' should be set to Australia (61) then press 'Next' then click on Finish. Next click on 'Settings'.
Click on 'use
a proxy server' then click the 'Advanced'
button. In the HTTP box type proxy.techinfo.com.au and under port, type 8080
Click on the box 'use the same proxy server for all protocols'
then click OK.
Under 'Dial-up Settings' type in
your username eg. fred and your password (both are shown on the bottom of
the invoice we sent you). The 'Domain name'
is not required and should be blank. Next click on the 'Properties' button.
Under the General tab, the Area code, Phone number should already be set. Put a
tick in the box labeled 'use area code and
dialing properties'. At the bottom of the screen make sure your modem is
selected in the 'Connect using'
box.
Under the 'Server types' tab, the
screen which appears should have 'Type of
Dial-Up Server' set as PPP:Windows
95, WindowsNT, Internet in the box.
(Note that this is slightly different if you are using Windows 98 & WinNT but as long
as it says PPP: Windowsxx you have the correct option).
On the rest of the screen, the boxes marked 'Enable software compression' and 'TCP/IP' (under protocols) are the only
ones with ticks (or crosses) in them - all others should be blank - remove the
unwanted ticks by clicking on each item one at a time.
Next click on 'TCP
/ IP Settings' On the page which appears, there should be a "radio button" (a black dot) should be in 'Server assigned IP address' and another in
'Specify name server address'. In
the 'Primary DNS' type in (in
place of the 0.0.0.0) 203.63.149.1
and in the 'Secondary DNS' type in 203.63.149.2.
Both the 'Primary WINS' and 'Secondary WINS' should have 0.0.0.0 in them. Both the 'Use IP header compression' and 'Use default gateway on remote network'
should have ticks in the box beside these options.
Press OK then OK and OK a third time
to close off the Dial-Up Networking setup and return to the 'connections' page.
The box labeled 'always dial my default connection' should have a dot in it.
Click on 'Apply' to save these changes.
Select the 'Programs' tab. Select 'Outlook Express' for both your Mail
and News programs.
Select the 'Advanced' tab. Do not change anything on this screen.
Select 'OK' to save these changes and go back to the 'Control Panel' screen.
Click on the X at the top right hand corner of the dialogue box to close all open
windows back to a 'clean' screen.
MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS V5 MAIL SETUP
From the Windows desktop screen, double click on 'Outlook Express'. Note that the first time
you run the software it may ask to choose a directory
- choose the default one that it is highlighting and then go through the importing of old
mail if it asks to do so.
Select 'Tools' then 'Options' put a tick in the option 'When starting, go directly to my inbox folder'
by clicking on the option. Next click on the 'Send'
tab. Near the bottom of the page make sure that 'plain text' is selected for both mail and news. (HTML will usually be selected for
mail by default). Click on '-Apply'
then 'OK'
Next select 'Tools' then 'accounts' and click on the 'Mail' tab at the top of the dialogue box.
Click on 'Add' then select 'Mail'
Enter under 'Display Name' your
real name eg. Fred Smith using upper and lower case as you choose. Click on 'Next'
Under 'e-mail address' make sure
the radio button (the black dot) is in the option 'I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use'
, type in your assigned e-mail address
eg. fred@techinfo.com.au
(Note: If you are a previous Gravity Internet customer, use xxxx@gravity.net.au in the
instructions above)
Note that this is all in lower case with no spaces. Click on 'Next'
At the top of this screen, the line should read 'Incoming mail server is a POP3 server'
In the box labeled 'Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP
or HTTP) server name' is: mail.techinfo.com.au
The 'Outgoing (SMTP) server name'
is also: mail.techinfo.com.au
Click on 'Next'
In this screen, type in your username
eg. fred Under password type in
your TECH INFO assigned password.
Click on 'Next' then 'Finish'
Now click on the 'Properties'
button on the right hand side. Under 'Reply
to' address copy in your e-mail address es exactly as it is under E-mail
address. Next click on the 'Connections'
tab and confirm that there is a tick in the 'Always
connect to this account using' box and 'Tech Info' is selected as the default
account.
MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS V5 NEWSGROUP READER SETUP
Continuing on from the Mail setup above, to setup the News
Reader, click on the 'News' tab at
the top of the dialogue box, then click on 'add'
, then select 'news' Type in the 'Display Name' as you want to see it, eg.
Fred Smith as you want to see it using upper and lower case letters (it should already be
here as MS Outlook Express remembers what you entered under the mail setup). After this
press 'Next'.
Under 'e-mail address' type in your TECH INFO
e-mail address eg. fred@techinfo.com.au (again, it should already be there)
then press 'Next'

Type in the News (NNTP) Server name
as: news.techinfo.com.au
The box labeled 'My news server requires me
to log on' should not have a tick in it. Click on 'Next' then click 'Finish'
Now click on the 'Properties'
button on the right hand side. Under 'Reply
to' address copy in your e-mail address es exactly as it is under E-mail
address. Next click on the 'Connections'
tab and confirm that there is a tick in the 'Always
connect to this account using' box and 'Tech Info' is selected as the default
account.
Next pick 'Close'
You are now setup to run your MS Explorer V5 with the TECH INFO Internet service.
To connect to the Internet, simply double click on
the Internet icon on the desktop screen (the blue 'e').
