| 1. SETUP A
DIAL-UP CONNECTION ON WINDOWS Me, 2000 or XP Note: You may find it
useful to print this page and work from the printed copy - click here
These instructions assume that you are
operating Windows XP with �Classic� menus enabled (to change to this mode,
right click on the Start button, select Properties and then �Classic
menu style� then OK to save and exit.
Click on Start, then Settings,
then Network & Dial Up Connections
Double click on the 'Make new connection' icon, then Next then
select Dial up to the Internet, then Next
Select the option I want to set up my Internet connection manually or I want to
connect through a Local Area Network (LAN)
Click Next Select the option I connect through a phone line
using a modem the click on Next
(If you have not yet installed you modem driver software, a dialogue box will pop up and
guide you through this process. After you have completed this, click on No
to exit the wizard and continue the dial up connection setup)
In the dialogue box type in the 'ISP modem number' as 9433-4444 for all
modems other than poor quality internal units which have a problem connecting to the
internet. In these cases, use the 33k6 modem number 9432-7222 Remove the tick in
the box Use Area Code and dialling rules
Next click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the page, then click
on the Addresses tab. Under the section headed DNS server
addresses, select the option Always use the following and in
the 'Primary DNS server' type in 203.63.149.1 and in the 'Alternate DNS
server' type in 203.63.149.2.
Click on OK then Next and type in your allocated username and
password in the boxes on this screen. Click on Next then type in Tech
Info in the box labelled Connection name then click on
Next
You will then be asked Do you want to set up an internet mail account now?
answer No, then Next and Finish
2. SETUP MS INTERNET EXPLORER FOR BROWSING THE NET
Go into Control Panel by selecting 'Start', 'Settings',
'Control Panel', then double click on the 'Internet Options' icon.
Under the 'General' tab. Type in the URL of the TECH INFO home page in the
'address' box as:- http://www.techinfo.com.au then click on 'Apply'
Select the 'Security' tab. Make sure 'medium' security is
selected then click on 'Apply' only if you changed the setting.
Select the 'Content' tab. Do not touch the 'Content Advisor' -
(this will prevent Internet Explorer from working at all).
Next, click on 'Connections' tab. Under the 'dial up settings' panel
there should be Tech Info listed, make sure that the radio button dot
is selecting the option Always dial my default connection. Click on 'Settings'.
Click on 'use a proxy server' then click the 'Advanced' button. In the
HTTP box type proxy.techinfo.com.au and under port, type 8080
Click on the box 'use the same proxy server for all protocols' then click OK.
Under 'Dial-up Settings' type in your username eg. fred and your
password (both are shown on the bottom of the invoice we sent you). The 'Domain name' is
not required and must be blank. Click on OK
Select the 'Programs' tab. Select 'Outlook Express' for both your Mail and
News programs.
Select the 'Advanced' tab. Do not change anything on this screen.
Select 'OK' to save these changes and go back to the 'Control Panel' screen.
Click on the X at the top right hand corner of the dialogue box to close all open
windows back to a 'clean' desktop screen.
3. MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS V5.x and V6.x E-MAIL ACCOUNT SETUP
From the Windows desktop screen, double click on 'Outlook
Express'. Note that the first time you run the software it may ask to
choose a directory - choose the default one that it is highlighting and then go through
the importing of old mail if it asks to do so.
Select 'Tools' then 'Options' put a tick in the option 'When starting, go
directly to my inbox folder' by clicking on the option. Next click on the 'Send'
tab. Near the bottom of the page make sure that 'plain text' is selected for both
mail and news. (HTML will usually be selected for mail by default). Click on 'Apply'
then 'OK'
Next select 'Tools' then 'accounts' and click on the 'Mail' tab
at the top of the dialogue box.
Click on 'Add' then select 'Mail'
Enter under 'Display Name' your real name eg. Fred Smith using upper and
lower case as you choose. Click on 'Next'
Under 'e-mail address' make sure the radio button (the black dot) is in the
option 'I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use' , type in your
assigned e-mail address eg. [email protected]
Note that this is all in lower case with no spaces. Click on 'Next'
At the top of this screen, the line should read 'Incoming mail server is a POP3
server'
In the box labelled 'Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server name' is: mail.techinfo.com.au
The 'Outgoing (SMTP) server name' is also: mail.techinfo.com.au Click on
'Next'
In this screen, type in your username eg. fred Under password type in your TECH
INFO assigned password. Click on 'Next' then 'Finish'
Now click on the 'Properties' button on the right hand side. Under 'Reply
to' address copy in your e-mail address es exactly as it is under E-mail
address. Next click on the 'Connections' tab and confirm that there is a tick
in the 'Always connect to this account using' box and 'Tech Info' is selected
as the default account.
4. MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS V5.x and V6.x NEWSGROUP READER SETUP
Continuing on from the Mail setup above, to setup the News
Reader, click on the 'News' tab at the top of the dialogue box, then click on 'add'
, then select 'news' Type in the 'Display Name' as you want to see it, eg. Fred
Smith as you want to see it using upper and lower case letters (it should already be
here as MS Outlook Express remembers what you entered under the mail setup). After this
press 'Next'.
Under 'e-mail address' type in your TECH INFO e-mail address eg. [email protected]
(again, it should already be there) then press 'Next'
Type in the News (NNTP) Server name as: news.techinfo.com.au
The box labelled 'My news server requires me to log on' should not have
a tick in it. Click on 'Next' then click 'Finish'
Now click on the 'Properties' button on the right hand side. Under 'Reply
to' address copy in your e-mail address es exactly as it is under E-mail
address. Next click on the 'Connections' tab and confirm that there is a tick
in the 'Always connect to this account using' box and 'Tech Info' is selected
as the default account.
Next pick 'Close'
You are now setup to run your Microsoft Internet Explorer V5.x or V6.x with the TECH
INFO Internet service.
To connect to the Internet, simply double click on the Internet icon on the desktop
screen (the blue 'e').
Note: When
the dialing box first appears, you must make sure that the option (about mid
way down the screen) is set to �Anyone who uses this computer� rather than
the default of �Me Only� or the dial up connection will fail. |
